Sedimentary and Petroleum Symposium at McMaster

Recently a day-long symposium for sedimentary and petroleum geoscientists from across Canada was hosted at McMaster. Susan Cunningham, a top executive at Noble Energy and a McMaster alumna, kicked off the event. The symposium also formally introduced Dr. Janok Bhattacharya, the inaugural holder of the Susan Cunningham Chair in Geology to McMaster; he is a McMaster alumnus and renowned researcher, originally based at the University of Houston. In 2010, Cunningham committed to $1-million personal gift to establish the chair in the Faculty of Science.

Electric Cars of the Future

Pavlos Kanaroglou, Geography & Earth Sciences and Canada Research Chair in Spatial Analysis, recently received $1.8 million from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) to explore the social costs and benefits of electric mobility in Canada. The $2.4 million project, with partners including Ford Motor Company of Canada, Burlington Hydro Inc., Electric Mobility Canada, the Canadian Automotive Association and the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, will help manufacturers better design and market electric vehicles that respond to the needs and wants of consumers.

Christine Wilson named Fellow of the Royal Society

The Faculty of Science congratulates Christine Wilson, Physics & Astronomy, on being elected to the Royal Society of Canada. Christine is a world expert on the structure and evolution of star formation within galaxies. Election to the academies of the Royal Society of Canada is the highest honour a scholar can achieve in the Arts, Humanities and Sciences in Canada.

Citizen Science on the Bruce Peninsula

Urban studentsThree Saugeen Ojibway Nation high school students, Kyle Robson, Christian Mackenzie and Gubby MacDonald, had the chance to experience hands-on environmental science this summer as they collected water samples and examined aquatic wildlife along a portion of Sucker Creek on the Bruce Peninsula. Participating in the URBAN First Nations, a new research and community partnership between the University and the Saugeen Ojibway Nation, the students then came to McMaster to analyze the samples and present their water quality results.

Science Professor to Lead Fields Institute

Congratulations to Walter Craig, Mathematics & Statistics, on his appointment as the new Director of the Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences. The Fields Institute, based in Toronto, is an international centre for research and training in all areas of the mathematical sciences and their applications. Walter’s term as director began July 1, and will last for the next three years. Matheus Grasselli, Mathematics & Statistics, currently serves as deputy director at the Fields.

Remembering Brian McCarry

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Brian McCarry, Professor in the Department of Chemistry & Chemical Biology. In addition to being a leading researcher and teacher, Brian was a positive and caring colleague who inspired all who worked with him. He will be greatly missed by his colleagues and many former students.
